Piers Morgan Publicly Humiliated By His Wife

English broadcaster Piers Morgan is sidelined after tripping on a step earlier this month and breaking his femur, an injury that has turned his home life into what his wife describes as a marital stress test.

Morgan’s wife, journalist Celia Walden, aired her frustrations in a Telegraph column published Tuesday under the headline, “Caring for my invalid husband Piers is the biggest test of our wedding vows.”

“As challenging as the aftermath of accidents are, they don’t tend to be quite as bad as we think they’ll be in the moment of diagnosis. This, however? So much worse. Certainly the biggest test of The Vows we’ve had to endure so far (and for anyone out there with a big hole where their sense of humour should be, yes, I do realise how lucky we are),” Walden wrote.

Walden said she was unprepared for the realities of caring for her husband, particularly after assembling a shower stool she described as grimly symbolic.

“I signed up to ‘in sickness and in health’, but there was nothing in the small print about ‘shower stools’, and once I’d assembled the most hideous piece of furniture in existence, I sent Piers a picture of it captioned: ‘This is what the end of a marriage looks like’, followed by a laughing emoji,” she wrote. “His reply came seconds later: ‘WAY too soon.’”

What may have been intended as gallows humor veers into open irritation as the piece continues.

“I had wanted to be a selfless wife … and an endlessly tolerant nurse, but as the days have worn on and Piers’s snappiness has increased, my patience has worn thin,” Walden wrote. “The portion sizes may have been a little reduced, the carbs eliminated and the ‘treats’ withheld as I have morphed from Florence Nightingale into Nurse Ratched. And we’ll get through this, of course we will, but I’ll be honest with you: right now, I’m one 4am fallen crutch away from Kathy Bates in Misery.”

Walden acknowledged her bedside manner has deteriorated but showed little hesitation in publishing a piece that publicly skewers her husband while he recovers from surgery.

The column is not the first time Walden has taken sharp public swipes at Piers Morgan. In February 2023, she posted a photo of herself in bed with actor Rupert Everett to promote an interview.

“In bed with Rupert Everett. And let me just say this: the man has good pillow talk,” she wrote at the time.

Walden has also spoken candidly, and dismissively, about her relationship with Morgan in past interviews. Recalling their courtship in an interview with The Sun, she said Morgan eventually told her, “‘The thing is, you tick every single one of my boxes.’”

“And I said, ‘Well, that’s weird because you don’t tick any of mine’. And now look at me …” Walden added, letting out what she described as a “resigned sigh.”

She said Morgan pursued her relentlessly, sending odd gifts to her office and refusing to take no for an answer.

“Basically, it was all just to beat me into a corner,” she said. “I kept insisting it was not going to happen but I found him quite amusing and in the end I just got very tired and worn down, which is what they all hope for, isn’t it? So it was just easier to go with it.”

“Being married to Piers is basically one very long eye roll,” Walden added.

She has even lamented his departure from Good Morning Britain, not for professional reasons, but because it disrupted her domestic routine.

“I was sad because I wake up and there he is, staring back at me morning after morning,” she said. “But really, he used to come back and by 9am was absolutely flattened, lying there on the sofa, catatonic, not bothering anyone. Unfortunately he’s got all his energy back now. Please, someone, just give him a job!”

For a broadcaster known for provoking outrage on television, Morgan now finds himself on the receiving end of it at home, with his recovery playing out as public entertainment at his expense.
