Before Scott Caan pursued a career in show business, his father, James Caan, warned him about the realities of Hollywood.
At the 2024 FOX Spring Preview for the second season of FOX’s “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” Scott, aged 47, discussed his bond with his late Academy Award-winning father.
Scott admits that he didn’t always envision himself becoming an actor.
“Not until I was a late teen, like 18 or 19 years old, I was always an athlete, and my old man told me that this business was goofy and [to] stay away from it,” he shared.
“I would do anything to not go to school, so I had all these different creative ideas. Anything to not finish high school and go to college,” he recalled.
“I sort of got lucky and met a director and ended up on a set somehow,” he continued.
Regarding father’s professional advice, Scott said, “It’s funny because he was pretty contradictory. He would say, ‘Don’t take it too seriously,’ but then he also took it very seriously. He always just said, ‘Look, work’s not your life,’ and I think it’s a good lesson.”
“You gotta be passionate about what you do and love what you do, but, at the same time, it can’t be the most important thing. You’ll die in it,” Scott continued.
James achieved widespread recognition following his breakthrough portrayal of Sonny Corleone in “The Godfather.” His performance earned him an Academy Award and a Golden Globe nomination. James passed away in 2022 from a heart attack at the age of 82.
Scott is among the five children of James. The late actor was also a father to James, Jacob, Alexander, and Tara.
