Veteran CBS Correspondent Exits Amid Controversy

A long-serving correspondent for 60 Minutes, Sharyn Alfonsi, is no longer with the program after CBS opted not to renew her contract. This decision follows her public disagreements with CBS leadership regarding a piece critical of the Trump administration.

Her contract expired recently, and according to reports, tensions rose after an internal dispute over a segment focusing on El Salvador’s CECOT prison. This facility was described by Alfonsi’s team as having brutal conditions.

Alfonsi expressed her concerns, stating that the decision to seek her departure conveys a frightening message across the newsroom.

Internal Conflicts

The issue began when CBS executives decided to pull the segment right before its scheduled airing. Emails revealed that Alfonsi believed the cancellation stemmed from political motivations by CBS News editor Bari Weiss.

Sources indicated that management perceived Alfonsi’s stance as insubordinate. In response, she maintained that she did not regret her comments and claimed the network punished her for resisting pressure to tone down the reporting.

A Defiant Stand

Alfonsi adamantly stated, “If they want me gone because I did my job, they’ll have to fire me.” She expressed concern over the future of the broadcast, warning it might turn into a version of 60 Minutes that lacks true journalistic integrity.

Despite controversy, the segment in question circulated after it mistakenly aired on a Canadian network’s app. When it later broadcasted officially, minor changes were noted, but many viewers recognized it as largely unchanged.

Alfonsi joined CBS in 2011 and became a key correspondent in 2015. The final episode of the season aired on May 17, and she remained a notable figure despite the ongoing disputes.

The Daily Mail sought comments from CBS and Paramount regarding this situation.
