New York Governor Kathy Hochul has come under fire after mocking President Donald Trump’s allegiance to the Knicks, inadvertently revealing her own lack of sports knowledge. Trump announced plans to attend a New York Knicks game, which follows the team’s successful advance to the NBA Finals.
“I think I’ll be going,” Trump stated, mentioning that he received a personal invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan.
This sparked a wave of criticism from Trump detractors, including Hochul, who attempted to question his dedication to Knicks history.
“I’d ask him to name the starting lineup from the 1993 championship team, see how HE does!” she jokingly said.
However, there was a significant flaw in her jest—the Knicks did not win a championship in 1993.

During that period, it was Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls who outperformed the Knicks and ultimately claimed the NBA title. It’s worth noting that New York hasn’t won an NBA championship since 1973. Social media users quickly took aim at the governor, accusing her of trying to dictate who qualifies as a fan while lacking basic knowledge of the franchise’s history.
“Maybe she got a case of the Bidens,” remarked one critic.
Another added, “Lol I bet Trump could name the 1993 Bulls starting lineup. Its very well known that he is a huge sports fan. What an idiot.”
Moreover, many pointed out the irony in questioning Trump’s sports credibility, considering his extensive history with Manhattan’s sports and celebrity scene. Over the years, Trump has frequently attended major sporting events, including boxing matches, UFC fights, and baseball games, and he has a longstanding friendship with Knicks owner James Dolan.
The mockery continued as users shared clips and memes aimed at Hochul’s faux pas. Originally, Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals was set for tonight, but it became irrelevant after New York completed the sweep in Game 4. Thus, the upcoming games Trump could potentially attend are:
• NBA Finals Game 3 at Madison Square Garden on June 8
• NBA Finals Game 4 at Madison Square Garden on June 10
Should he attend, it would mark the first time a sitting U.S. president has ever been present at an NBA Finals game.
