Alex Manninger, a distinguished former goalkeeper for the Austria national team, tragically lost his life in a road incident on Thursday. The Austrian Football Association reported that he was 48 years old.
Reports from Austrian media, including Kronen Zeitung, revealed that Manninger’s vehicle collided with a passenger train at an uncontrolled crossing close to Salzburg.

Manninger gained recognition with 33 caps for Austria and developed his career within the ranks of Arsenal from 1997 to 2001, primarily serving as a backup keeper.
His professional journey led him through several Italian clubs, including Fiorentina, Torino, Bologna, Siena, Udinese, and Juventus. He concluded his playing career with Liverpool during the 2016-17 season.

The OEFB honored Manninger as a significant figure in Austrian football.
Peter Schoettel, the OEFB sporting director, praised him, stating, “Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador of Austrian football on and off the pitch.”
He continued, “With his international career, he has set standards and inspired and shaped many young goalkeepers. His professionalism, calmness, and reliability made him a key part of his teams and the national squad.”
