Elizabeth Banks is voicing her confusion over the choice of white female voters who helped support President Donald Trump in the 2024 election, expressing disbelief that many backed him instead of then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
During a recent episode of a Bustle podcast, she referenced her character from the Hunger Games, urging women to resist what she described as a “fascist regime.”
“Effie is the model, guys. I don’t understand the 53% of white ladies that didn’t vote for Kamala. What were you thinking?” Banks remarked.
In the Hunger Games series, Banks portrays Effie Trinket, a character who transitions from a staunch supporter of the Capitol to someone challenging the oppressive system.
She suggested that this transformation should inspire contemporary voters.
“I wish more of us were becoming revolutionaries,” Banks stated, referencing her character’s journey.
“Effie represents someone who initially benefits from a fascist regime but eventually recognizes the injustice when Katniss and Peeta face their plight.”
Post-election data from the Pew Research Center indicated that a significant majority of white women voted for Trump, a statistic that Banks openly scrutinized.
Throughout the campaign, she actively supported Harris, including a Las Vegas event focused on abortion rights, which she highlighted on social media.
“19 DAYS until we elect @kamalaharris President of the United States! I joined my friends at @reproforallnv yesterday and jumped on Kamala’s Reproductive Freedom Bus in Las Vegas,” she shared.
“Our rights, our freedom, and our access to healthcare are literally at stake. Please check your registration status and make a plan for Election Day. Let’s go!”
Banks will not return to her role as Effie in the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, where actress Elle Fanning is set to portray a younger version of the character.
“Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch woke celebrities in Hollywood say or think,” remarked White House spokesman Davis Ingle in a response to Banks’ comments.
