On Thursday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken pointed the finger at former President Trump for the $6 billion gift to Iran under President Joe Biden’s administration.
The Hamas attack on Israel occurred just a few weeks after President Biden authorized the release of $6 billion in funding to Iran.
The Biden administration has granted banks a waiver to transfer $6 billion in Iranian oil funds, which were previously frozen, without the risk of U.S. sanctions. This move was a crucial step toward securing the release of five American citizens who have been held in Iran, according to individuals familiar with the situation.
As part of this agreement, the administration will also release five Iranian citizens currently detained in the United States.
Now Blinken pinned the blame on Trump, asserting that the $6 billion handed to Iran by Biden is currently in Qatar.
This is false. The account was established during the Barack Obama administration.
“It was set up by Section 1245 of the FY2012 NDAA that mandated its creation and set the parameters of its usage,” former State Department advisor on Iran Gabriel Noronha said on Thursday.
“Obama is the one who signed that bill into law – we had to follow it, and did so in a way that minimized Iran’s revenue,” he added.
Still, Blinken targeted Trump and claimed the $6 billion gift to Iran is still in Qatar.
