Longtime Democratic Congressman Withdraws from Re-Election Race

Veteran Democratic lawmaker Steve Cohen announced on Friday his decision to step away from seeking re-election in 2026, concluding a nearly two-decade presence in Congress. This announcement comes as Tennessee Republicans are actively transforming the state’s political landscape in anticipation of the midterms.

Having represented Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District since 2007, Cohen’s retirement follows state legislators’ approval of a controversial new congressional map altering the Memphis-area districts significantly.

The seasoned congressman criticized the redistricting plan, even suggesting the possibility of legal action, before ultimately deciding against another campaign.

“The state legislature is trying to take it over,” Cohen remarked earlier this week. “And that’s absurd. It was all partially because it’s a majority Black city.”

Republicans justify the new map as a necessary adjustment reflecting population changes across Tennessee. Conversely, Democrats assert that the changes diminish their influence in Memphis, one of the state’s remaining blue bastions.

Cohen’s exit paves the way for a competitive Democratic primary in Memphis, where several local and state officials are already positioning themselves for the upcoming election. Previously, State Rep. Justin Pearson had launched a challenge against Cohen prior to the intensifying redistricting dispute.

During the Trump administration, Cohen became a prominent progressive figure in the South, frequently featured in media for his strong criticism of Trump on various issues, including impeachment and immigration.

Prior to his congressional service, Cohen spent over 20 years in the Tennessee Senate, establishing himself as a key player in Memphis politics.

His departure provides Tennessee Republicans with an opportunity to further solidify their control over the state’s congressional representation. GOP leaders are open about their aim to enhance their advantages in upcoming federal elections.

The redistricting controversy is set to escalate, with left-wing activist groups and civil rights organizations gearing up for legal challenges against the newly drawn district lines.
