U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has verified that it responded to Iranian attacks involving drones near the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday night.
Multiple reports indicate that Iranian forces targeted a U.S. commercial vessel with four drones, all of which were successfully intercepted by U.S. forces.
Following this, U.S. assets executed a strike on an Iranian control station in Bandar Abbas, thwarting a potential fifth drone launch.
These drones posed a significant threat in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iranian forces have effectively blockaded since February 28. Initial reports did not disclose specific details about the drones’ models or payloads.
The U.S. counteraction aimed to neutralize the drone threat before further escalations could occur. CENTCOM reported no American casualties or damage to its vessels during these exchanges.
On Thursday, CENTCOM confirmed that all four Iranian drones had been shot down, adding that Iran also launched at least one ballistic missile toward a U.S. installation in Kuwait.
“On May 27, Iran fired a ballistic missile at Kuwait, which was intercepted by local forces. This clear breach of the ceasefire occurred shortly after the drone attacks,” CENTCOM disclosed.
“U.S. forces successfully intercepted all drones and prevented a sixth drone launch from Bandar Abbas,” the statement emphasized. “We remain vigilant in defending our forces against unprovoked Iranian hostility.”

The recent increase in hostilities coincided with a delicate ceasefire that began on April 8. While there have been previous exchanges of fire, this incident has been uniquely significant as CENTCOM has officially labeled it a ceasefire violation.
Despite the mounting tensions, no clear indications suggest that peace negotiations have come to a halt. Former President Donald Trump has warned that if the U.S. demands regarding Iran’s nuclear program and free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz are not addressed, conflict could reignite in the near future.
