Hunter Biden is facing nine new charges in a federal indictment in California.
Those new charges include: Evasion of Taxes; Failure to File/Pay Taxes; and False/Fraudulent Tax Return.
The indictment details a “four-year scheme” to avoid more than $1.4 million in tax obligations and to file false returns, legal analyst TechnoFog reported.
Hunter Biden has been charged in connection with a long-running Justice Department inquiry into his taxes, marking the second criminal prosecution brought against President Joe Biden’s son by special counsel David Weiss.
A plea agreement fell through in July, just as the case was about to be resolved. Hunter Biden’s rich overseas business transactions are at the heart of House Republicans’ impeachment investigation into Joe Biden.
Now, the president will campaign for a second term and face a Republican impeachment bid, while his son fights to escape prison in two criminal trials.
Hunter Biden’s attorneys did not respond immediately, and CNN has contacted out to the White House for comment.
According to court records from the now-defunct plea agreement, Hunter Biden regularly missed IRS deadlines to pay his federal taxes on schedule, finally owing the government about $2 million. He paid it back in 2021, using a loan from a friend.
Federal authorities have been investigating Hunter Biden’s finances since 2018, and in August, Trump-appointed US Attorney David Weiss was named special counsel.
The investigation appeared to be coming to a conclusion this summer when Hunter Biden decided to plead guilty to two tax felonies, with prosecutors recommending no jail time. They also agreed that if he kept out of trouble for two years, a firearms charge would be withdrawn.
However, both proposed partnerships fell apart after being scrutinized by a federal judge and conflicts over the fine language. Then, in September, Weiss indicted Hunter Biden on three charges connected to his purchase of a gun from a shop in Delaware in 2018 when prosecutors claim he was an illicit drug user. In the gun possession and false statements case, he has pled not guilty.
Hunter Biden’s attorneys earlier accused Weiss of “bending to political pressure” from Republicans, claiming that his actions “present a grave threat to our system of justice.”
Republicans have assailed Weiss in part because of testimony from two IRS whistleblowers who were involved in the investigation and claimed to have witnessed political meddling by the Justice Department. According to the whistleblowers, career IRS agents recommended Hunter Biden face felony tax charges in early 2022.
The assertions of the whistleblowers have been denied by Weiss and Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Hunter Biden generated millions of dollars in Ukraine, China, Romania, and other nations from private equity investments, corporate consulting, and legal fees. Prosecutors have stated that he had the funds to purchase expensive products like as a Porsche and that he had been told about his impending tax problems by accountants and associates – but he still missed the IRS deadlines.
As part of their own investigations, House Republicans have focused on several of these international transactions.
President Joe Biden has been shown to have received direct monthly payments from one of his son Hunter Biden’s businesses, the Oversight Committee announced on Monday.
“Today, House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) released subpoenaed bank records revealing Hunter Biden’s business entity, Owasco PC, made direct monthly payments to Joe Biden,” the committee announced. “Hunter Biden is currently under an investigation by the Department of Justice for using the Owasco PC corporate account for tax evasion and other serious crimes.”
“Following subpoenas to obtain Biden family associates’ bank records, Chairman Comer issued subpoenas for Hunter and James Biden’s personal and business bank records,” the statement continued. “The House Oversight Committee has identified over 20 shell companies and uncovered how the Bidens and their associates raked in over $24 million dollars between 2015 and 2019 by selling Joe Biden as “the brand.” Financial records obtained show Hunter Biden’s business account, Owasco PC, received payments from Chinese-state linked companies and other foreign nationals and companies.
“Payments to Joe Biden from Hunter’s Owasco PC corporate account are part of a pattern revealing Joe Biden knew about, participated in, and benefited from his family’s influence peddling schemes,” the statement added. “As the Bidens received millions from foreign nationals and companies in China, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and Kazakhstan, Joe Biden dined with his family’s foreign associates, spoke to them by speakerphone, had coffee, attended meetings, and ultimately received payments that were funded by his family’s business dealings.”
“Chairman Comer today released a video outlining the direct payments Joe Biden received from Hunter’s Owasco PC bank account and stated the House Oversight Committee will continue to follow the money to ensure accountability for President Biden’s involvement in his family’s corrupt domestic and international business schemes.”
