According to Kash Patel, the FBI has successfully thwarted four significant terror plots during the holiday season, notably including a Halloween threat, while emphasizing the persistent risk of a substantial attack on American soil.
During an appearance on the “Hang Out with Sean Hannity” podcast, Patel noted the bureau’s incorporation of advanced technology to address shifting threats, even as the stakes continue to rise.
Patel explained, “In December alone last year, we prevented four terrorist attacks within just four weeks during the holidays.” He detailed various plots, including one targeted at locations in Texas, Florida, and New York, stating, “We stopped them all.”
One plot dubbed the “Pumpkin Day” scheme involved two Michigan men allegedly inspired by ISIS who planned to execute a mass shooting in a Detroit suburb, using “pumpkin” as their code word.
In addition to the Michigan threat, Patel mentioned other stopped threats originating in Texas, Florida, and New York. He recalled a North Carolina man who allegedly intended to use knives and hammers for a New Year’s Eve attack at a grocery store and fast-food outlet.
Despite successfully averting these threats, Patel stressed that federal law enforcement faces ongoing challenges.
“We bear the responsibility for safeguarding America,” he asserted, noting the vigilance required to prevent any potential attacks.
Patel admitted that concerns about another large-scale assault, reminiscent of September 11, keep him awake at night, emphasizing that terrorist groups are often patient and will wait for the right moment.
He remarked, “Terrorists are exceedingly patient,” underlining the need for continuous monitoring.
Furthermore, he credited the FBI’s expanded use of artificial intelligence in staying ahead of evolving threats. Patel explained that AI tools assist in managing significant data volumes, including tips from the public, and in criminal investigations.
“AI was never utilized at the FBI until we implemented it. Now it’s everywhere,” he stated.
He elaborated on its effectiveness, especially in efficiently sorting through thousands of weekly tips. “Imagine the volume of tips we receive weekly—thousands. Without AI, we could never process them all,” he added.
Patel highlighted a specific instance where AI helped prevent a school massacre in North Carolina by efficiently triaging a tip received.
He further cautioned that the withdrawal from Afghanistan has raised alarms about potential regrouping by terrorist organizations, reinforcing the pressing need for continuous vigilance.
