The recent sexual misconduct allegations against Rep. Eric Swalwell are sending shockwaves through the Democratic Party, particularly affecting Sen. Ruben Gallego. Gallego’s swift defense of Swalwell is now under intense scrutiny.
On Monday, Swalwell announced his forthcoming resignation from Congress due to accusations of rape and sharing explicit images with younger women. His actions had already drawn the attention of the House Ethics Committee.
Gallego, who has referred to Swalwell as his “best friend in the world,” was quick to support him amidst swirling rumors of harassment and nondisclosure agreements. “When you are in first place, is when they target you,” he stated last week in defense of Swalwell.
As speculation intensified regarding an imminent damaging report, Gallego initially dismissed the allegations. However, following revelations of a former staffer’s assault claim against Swalwell, he reversed his stance, retracting his endorsement.
“I regret coming to his defense without knowing all the details,” Gallego expressed, indicating shock over the unfolding events. He has been floated as a potential presidential candidate for 2028.
The two politicians share a long-standing friendship, with Gallego leading Swalwell’s 2020 presidential campaign and both having appeared at numerous events together. Their past controversies, including accepting an $85,000 trip to Qatar, have been revisited in light of recent developments.
Gallego’s financial connections to Swalwell are also raising eyebrows. He reportedly utilized $13,000 in campaign funds for an AI startup founded by Swalwell, generating conflict-of-interest concerns. Additionally, campaign finance disclosures reveal that Gallego donated $8,000 to Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign.
Key questions are now being asked regarding Gallego’s awareness of the allegations against Swalwell, as highlighted by influencer Yashar Ali. Republican strategist Matt Whitlock found it implausible that Gallego was unaware of the situation.
In response to the claims, Gallego asserted he had no prior knowledge of any misconduct, expressing his disappointment over the betrayal of trust from a supposed friend.
The unfolding controversy has also led to a re-examination of Gallego’s personal life, including details about his divorce and subsequent relationship with his current wife, which Swalwell also attended.
Despite the serious accusations, Swalwell maintains his innocence, claiming the allegations are wholly fabricated.
