Alina Habba, attorney and spokesperson for ex-President Donald Trump, claimed that Democrats are targeting the GOP’s presidential candidate in court because they can’t win against him in the elections.
“The fact that we have two courts, not one — criminal and civil — being used against one man because they cannot beat him in the polls is a disgrace to the American judicial system,” she said in remarks at the New York State Supreme Court Building in Manhattan after opening arguments in the hush money case.
“You should not have two teams of lawyers here today. You should not even be here today, because he did nothing wrong. It is the epitome of a witch hunt,” she told reporters.
Habba stated that she had recently left another courtroom where Trump faced allegations of inflating his asset values to secure favorable loans, which he has since repaid.
Initially, he was instructed to put up a $454 million bond for his appeal, but an appeals court later reduced it to $175 million. On Monday, New York Judge Arthur Engoron approved this bond, will prevent Democratic New York Attorney General Letitia James’ efforts to seize his assets during the appeal process.
Habba criticized Engoron for lacking comprehension of “basic principles of financing” and said he and James “had no idea what they were talking about.”
She labeled the hush money case — wherein Bragg accuses Trump of falsifying business records — a “joke” and “an affront” to the judicial system.
“I am sick of coming in front of the press and saying this, but you have to because you people need to understand what is going on. God forbid you put an accounting thing in for ‘legal counsel.’ … Because they’re afraid of 2024. And you know what? They should be because the American people are not stupid. They see what’s going on,” she concluded.
