Cole Allen, a 31-year-old who donated to Kamala Harris and attended a “No Kings” rally, was charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.
Actress January Jones made headlines by claiming on social media that the shooting scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a staged event, accusing authorities of orchestrating a political drama without providing any evidence.
In her Instagram Stories post, Jones wrote, “Do you have a boring dinner party coming up, and lots of losers and fake friends have rsvp’d? Are you looking for help staging a small scale low risk assassination attempt to get out of it? Look no further, the US Government is your man, call us now at 1-800-wehate-americans.” Her flippant remark sparked backlash as critics accused her of trivializing a serious situation.
Supporters, however, praised Jones for her bold stance against Washington politics. She did not clarify her reasoning for believing the event was staged, nor did she provide supporting evidence.
Jones was not alone in her skepticism; actress Mia Farrow also proposed that the incident might have been an attempt to garner political sympathy for Trump, suggesting that he could benefit from chaos.
In a post on Bluesky, Farrow questioned Trump’s desperation to improve his approval ratings amidst broader national turmoil, linking to an article that did not support her claims. Both actresses failed to explain how Allen could have been involved in any alleged scheme.
Reports about Allen indicate a troubling backstory. Accounts show he had apologized to friends and family prior to his trip to Washington, D.C., where he apparently devised a plan leading up to the incident.
The backlash from Jones’ comments reveals a clear divide in viewpoints: conservatives emphasizing the seriousness of violent threats, while some liberal commentators frame the incident as mere political theater. The discourse is intensifying on social media, contrasting sharply with ongoing federal investigations into the case.
Neither Jones nor Farrow has made additional remarks since their initial posts.
