A sweeping initiative has been launched by the Trump administration, revealing federal election-related charges against numerous foreign nationals. This action aims to address illegal voting, fraudulent registrations, and the false claim of American citizenship across five different states.
The Department of Justice identified 48 noncitizens facing allegations arising from election violations in states including Pennsylvania, California, Florida, New York, and Nevada. These cases extend back several years, covering the 2022 midterms through to the 2024 presidential election.
Prosecutors reported that the accused consist of lawful permanent residents along with one individual residing in the country illegally. Some of the defendants allegedly voted in multiple federal elections, while others are accused of obscuring their voting histories when seeking American citizenship.
California holds the largest share of these cases, with 28 individuals facing charges across four judicial districts. Allegations vary from unlawful voting to providing false statements during naturalization.
In the Central District of California, 13 defendants have been charged with felonies, particularly concerning false citizenship application statements. For instance, 72-year-old Belizean Omar Alexander Muñoz allegedly registered to vote in 2019 by misrepresenting his citizenship status.
Authorities claim that Muñoz participated in elections during 2020, 2022, and 2024 while denying any previous claims of U.S. citizenship during his naturalization process.
Another accused from California, Butleng Taing, 43, allegedly registered to vote in 2021 and participated in subsequent elections, providing false information about his citizenship on official documents.
In Pennsylvania, authorities have charged nine foreign nationals across two judicial districts. These include Alfredo Santiesteban, a 73-year-old Cuban national who is described as an illegal immigrant, having reportedly voted in the 2024 general election.
Additional defendants from Pennsylvania include lawful permanent residents from various countries, all charged with voting despite lacking American citizenship.
Florida’s prosecutors have also charged six individuals with election-related crimes, including fraudulent citizenship claims and illegal voting. Many of these defendants are alleged to have participated in both the 2022 and 2024 federal elections.
In New York, there are four ongoing cases involving foreign nationals who submitted fraudulent voter registrations and cast votes in the 2024 elections. Two defendants admitted in interviews that they knowingly voted while not being American citizens.
Nevada has charged a Filipino national for casting a vote in a federal election that included presidential and congressional contests.
This announcement emerges as the nation is gearing up for the midterm elections on November 3, with election integrity remaining a paramount issue in political discussions.
Under federal law, noncitizens are prohibited from voting in federal elections, including lawful permanent residents who have not yet acquired citizenship.
The Justice Department’s announcement coincides with additional prosecutions related to elections that were previously reported, involving 16 noncitizens in North Carolina, New York, and Idaho earlier this month.
While these cases span multiple election cycles, the department did not demonstrate that these alleged violations impacted any election results or indicated a widespread issue of noncitizen voting.
