New Federal Charges Filed Against James Comey

Former FBI Director James Comey is once again in the crosshairs of the legal system, as the Justice Department has announced new criminal charges against him. This development marks another turn in the ongoing saga involving one of the most contentious figures in American law enforcement.

The fresh charges follow earlier federal proceedings against Comey, which included accusations related to his congressional testimony and a social media post deemed threatening toward Trump.

In response, Comey shared his thoughts in an Instagram video, stating, “they’re back again,” while insisting on his innocence. His assertions raised questions about the implications of this new prosecution for his already complex legal situation.

The charges reportedly arise from a lengthy investigation into Comey’s management of sensitive government information. Prosecutors have been scrutinizing whether he improperly revealed classified data, according to sources familiar with the inquiry.

Background of Legal Troubles

This situation brings renewed focus to Comey’s role in politically charged investigations during the 2016 presidential election. As the FBI director at the time, he oversaw inquiries into Hillary Clinton’s private email use and the early investigations into Russian interference in the election.

In September 2025, Comey face federal charges for making false statements and obstructing congressional proceedings. He stood accused of misleading lawmakers during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding an FBI official’s role as an anonymous source for news outlets. That case was dismissed due to the improper appointment of the prosecutor involved.

Comey was later indicted in April 2026 over an Instagram post that creatively displayed seashells as a message interpreted as a threat against Trump. This interpretation was disputed by Comey’s defense team.

Investigation Outcomes

The Justice Department’s inspector general has also looked into Comey’s management of internal FBI documents. While a 2019 inquiry found that he violated policies by giving an unclassified memo to a friend for media disclosure, it did not prove any intentional leaks of classified information. The Department chose not to prosecute him in that instance.

After being dismissed by Trump in May 2017, Comey transformed into a vocal critic of the former president, leading to a protracted political clash that persisted well beyond Trump’s first term. This latest set of charges adds yet another layer to their fraught relationship between the Trump administration and the former head of the FBI.
