Former President Barack Obama has recently opened up about the challenges he faces at home due to his heightened political activity during Donald Trump’s presidency.
In a May 4 interview with The New Yorker, Obama revealed that his active engagement in politics has created strain within his marriage. He expressed that Michelle Obama wishes he would take a step back and spend more time with her.
“She wants to see her husband easing up and enjoying what remains of our lives,” he shared. “It does create a genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her.”
Initially, Obama maintained a low profile, adhering to the tradition of former presidents refraining from critiquing their successors. However, as Trump’s administration progressed, Obama began to voice his opinions more often.
Now, during Trump’s second term, Obama has stepped into a more visible role, positioning himself as a fierce critic of the current administration.
“People aren’t looking at me in historical comparison to other presidents,” he pointed out. “They don’t care about the fact that no other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after they left office.”
Obama claims that Trump’s “recklessness” was a significant factor that drew him back into political discourse, citing issues like the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris climate accords and changes targeting the Affordable Care Act.
His reinvigorated political presence has exceeded his initial intentions, as he admitted to the magazine.
The former president has notably utilized social media to mobilize Democratic support on pivotal issues, including a campaign related to redistricting in Virginia.
Data reveals that five posts urging Virginians to support a ballot measure on congressional district redrawing received over 220 million views.
“Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack,” Obama asserted in March. He criticized Republican-led states for manipulating electoral maps to gain an unfair advantage.
Michelle Obama has also become more vocal, using podcasts and media appearances to express her criticisms of the Trump administration.
Previously, the former president has acknowledged relationship difficulties, mentioning in 2025 that he had been “digging myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle” after she missed significant events, including Trump’s inauguration.
