Close Call: United Airlines Plane Collides with Bakery Truck in New Jersey

A United Airlines aircraft made contact with a bakery truck on the New Jersey Turnpike as it approached Newark Liberty International Airport. Fortunately, the truck driver only experienced minor injuries after the incident, and the plane landed without further complications.

The aircraft involved was identified as a Boeing 767-400, specifically United Airlines Flight 169, which had just arrived from Venice, Italy.

Chuck Paterakis, the senior vice president of Transportation & Logistics at H&S Bakery, reported that the truck driver was en route from Baltimore to New Jersey when the jet struck his vehicle. The driver received treatment for minor cuts after being taken to a local hospital, as noted by Fox Baltimore.

Dashcam footage from the bakery truck provided a remarkable view of the moments leading up to the impact. The driver appeared carefree, singing as the sound of the approaching plane grew louder. He was seen looking up just before the plane’s approach.

The video captures a dramatic moment when one of the plane’s wheels hit the truck’s window, causing glass to shatter inside the truck’s cabin. Fortunately, the driver was treated for only minor injuries, according to reports.

Paterakis expressed his gratitude, stating, “To me, that everybody on that plane, everybody and the driver, God was looking after them; there’s no doubt.” He added that if the incident were to happen again, survival might not be guaranteed.

Following the collision, the plane landed safely on Runway 29, which runs parallel to the highway. It’s common for arriving flights to pass over the turnpike at a low altitude before landing.

United Airlines confirmed that none of the 221 passengers or 10 crew members aboard were harmed. A spokesperson added that their maintenance team is currently assessing the damage to the aircraft and will investigate the circumstances of the incident.
