Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a married Democrat from California, is facing criticism following reports of him kissing a significantly younger congressional staffer during a summer event in 2023.
Sources indicated that Gomez was seen engaging in this behavior at a backyard party thrown by fellow Representative Eric Swalwell, where several lawmakers were present.
As Swalwell deals with serious allegations of his own, some within the Democratic Party are questioning Gomez’s actions. One source emphasized the need to address what they describe as a troubling trend among married lawmakers.
“This behavior of open philandering by married male members of Congress is pervasive and long overdue to be addressed,” the source stated, expressing concern over the power dynamics involved. “How is that not grounds for expulsion?”
The incident reportedly took place outside, where Gomez and the aide were seen in a compromising position near parked cars. Witnesses described the scene as considerably open.
“She was sitting on the hood of the car and they were going at it,” said one observer, noting that the interaction was not discreet. Others attending the event shared similar observations, raising eyebrows among attendees.
Although Gomez’s spokesperson refuted these claims as “not true,” it has sparked significant discussions regarding the appropriateness of such behavior, especially with Gomez being married.
While House ethics rules permit consensual relationships with aides not directly supervised, many still find the conduct troubling. A second source pointed out, “he was married,” adding to the dissatisfaction with Gomez’s actions.
The controversy surrounding Gomez comes in the wake of Swalwell’s resignation amid serious sexual misconduct allegations. As the situation unravels, bipartisan calls for accountability have emerged from Capitol Hill.
Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales also recently resigned due to an affair, demonstrating that scrutiny is not limited to any single party. Similarly, Florida Rep. Cory Mills is under investigation for alleged misconduct.
