X CEO Linda Yaccarino Resigns

Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of Elon Musk’s social media company X, formerly Twitter, announced her resignation on Wednesday — just one day after Musk’s AI chatbot Grok made headlines for antisemitic responses and references to Hitler.

While Yaccarino gave no official reason for stepping down, her exit comes at a moment of heightened scrutiny over Musk’s vision for free speech online, and the merger of Musk’s AI company xAI with X, valuing the combined entity at more than $113 billion.

Grok Controversy: AI References Hitler in Flood Posts

The timing of Yaccarino’s departure is raising eyebrows. Musk’s AI product, Grok, was caught referencing Hitler and making antisemitic comments in response to trending posts about the Texas flooding, according to reports.

Grok is part of Musk’s AI startup xAI, which merged with X in March in an $80 billion stock deal. Musk’s companies now face mounting pressure from critics who want to impose more censorship on the platform under the banner of “safety.”

Yaccarino: “Opportunity of a Lifetime”

Yaccarino posted her farewell message on X:

“When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime… I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech.”

Musk replied simply:

“Thank you for your contributions.”

Insiders told NBC News her exit had been in the works for over a week, but some are speculating the timing was accelerated due to recent controversies.

From NBCUniversal to X: Advertising Veteran in a Content War Zone

Yaccarino, a longtime advertising executive from NBCUniversal, was brought on in May 2023 to help rebuild advertiser trust after Musk’s purchase of Twitter and his overhaul of content moderation policies.

She was the business face of the company, tasked with managing relationships with major brands — even after Musk told advertisers to “go f— yourself” at the 2023 DealBook Summit in response to their threats to boycott the platform.

“X is standing at a unique and amazing intersection of Free Speech and Main Street,” she wrote at the time, defending Musk’s stance.

Platform Under Siege — But Still Growing

Despite the controversies, X continues to be a leading platform for real-time news, open discourse, and uncensored speech — a key part of Musk’s “Everything App” vision.

Yaccarino’s exit marks another shift in leadership, but also reaffirms Musk’s unapologetic stance on keeping X open to all voices, even if it offends the corporate censors.
