The widow of Corey Comperatore, who lost his life during the July 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, has shared her suspicions about the involvement of powerful political figures.
Helen Comperatore, mourning her husband who died protecting others, has expressed both grief and her belief that the shooter might have had accomplices. She emphasizes her position against conspiracy theories suggesting the event was staged, while still questioning whether the gunman acted alone.
“I do not believe that this kid just got out of bed that day and decided to come over there and kill the president,” she remarked to The New York Times, indicating the potential for external influence in the attack.
Her thoughts coincide with rising political tension following the incident, alongside another attempted assassination at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. These occurrences have spurred contrasting narratives from both sides of the political spectrum.
Despite her feelings of suspicion, Comperatore has also spoken against the emotional impact of conspiracy theories, especially those claiming the shooting was orchestrated for political gain. “When they say it was staged… I mean, how? Why would you think that the president would stage taking a bullet? I mean, that’s insane,” she stated.
Senator Rand Paul reviewed the matter, labeling it a “complete breakdown of security,” highlighting issues in the coordination between local law enforcement and the Secret Service. Reports suggest the shooter took full responsibility, asserting he saw “no one else picking up the slack” prior to the assault.
Comperatore described the chaos following her husband’s death, feeling overwhelmed and distrusting of government actions. She also noted political comments made by Biden, particularly one where he suggested it was “time to put Trump in a bull’s-eye,” contributing to her reluctance to engage with him after the tragedy.
She firmly believes that her husband’s death was not a part of a wider political strategy to sway the election, asserting, “I think he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Corey Comperatore, a dedicated firefighter, is remembered as a hero for his sacrifice. His widow described him as her “soul mate,” mourning the abrupt change in their lives after that fateful day.
“We went from having a beautiful family day together to leaving there. It was the worst day of our lives,” she reflected, underscoring the ongoing struggle to find closure.
As inquiries persist and debates continue, Comperatore aims to focus on her family’s future, yet questions about the tragic event in Butler remain a heavy burden on her heart.
“I want to know what happened,” she closed, expressing a collective yearning within her family for answers. “At the end of the day my husband’s gone,” she said, emphasizing the pain and horror of the circumstances surrounding his death.
