Omar Fateh is a socialist running for the Minneapolis mayor’s office. He caused controversy on social media when he spoke and waved the Somali flag during an election rally in Minneapolis.
Fateh used phrases such as “Assalamualaikum” and “Somalia Hira State,” urging the voters to “Vote early until November 4, “I need you vote,” and Hadan Udkina, Hello. We’re gonna be winning.”
The remarks were delivered while he waved a Somalia flag against a similar-themed backdrop, with Somalia music playing in the background. On the stage was an American flag nestled amongst multiple Somali flags.
BREAKING NEWS: Americans were shocked to see Minneapolis mayor candidate Omar Fateh pledge loyalty to Somalia by waving the Somalia flag, and using a foreign tongue to gain votes from the Somali community.

Fateh has stated openly that he prioritizes the interests of Somalis. He defeated the incumbent mayor Jacob Frey in a shocking result at the convention this summer. It was not long before Minnesota DFL Chair Richard Carlbom announced the endorsement would be revoked due to controversy over vote-counting and computer errors during convention.
Fateh runs as a Democratic Socialist in the open, and has been compared to New York’s mayoral candidate Zohran Mahdani. Fateh, like Mamdani has also vowed openly to defy federal immigration policy.
Protecting all our communities against Donald Trump requires that MPD not interact with ICE – whether for an immigration raid, or otherwise. In a video posted on X, he stated that our residents deserve a Mayor who is willing to stand up against Donald Trump.
Fateh, like Mamdani, has also called for a freeze on rent and to raise the minimum wage in the city to $20 an hour by 2028. As a Stevens Square renter with two jobs, a part-time senator job and an upcoming baby, I’m interested in keeping money in the pockets of working people and in the local economy. In an extra post from the same day, said that he would work towards a minimum wage of $20 by 2028 and rent stabilization.
Frey has been consistently leading in polls, even though Fateh had a strong lead after receiving the DFL’s endorsement in August. Fateh, who has received endorsements by other anti-Frey campaigns, is relying on grassroots efforts to navigate the city’s ranked choice voting system.
