At least 11 people were stabbed during a violent attack inside a Walmart Supercenter in Traverse City, Michigan on Saturday. The incident unfolded just after 5 p.m. at the store on Crossing Circle.
Police confirmed a suspect was taken into custody. A motive has not yet been released.
Chaos Inside the Store
Witnesses say panic erupted when the attacker pulled a knife near the pharmacy counter. Shoppers, including many elderly victims, ran for their lives as the suspect began stabbing people at random.
At least three victims required emergency surgery. First responders were seen applying tourniquets at the scene.
Law Enforcement Response
Local and federal authorities responded quickly. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said his team was assisting the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
Michigan State Police released a statement confirming the stabbing and noting that “details are limited at this time.” Authorities confirmed the suspect is no longer a threat and there is no danger to the public.
Victims Treated at Local Hospital
All injured victims were taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. The hospital confirmed it was experiencing a higher-than-usual volume of patients due to the attack.
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action,” Munson Healthcare said in a statement.
Walmart, Governor Whitmer Issue Statements
Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington said the company is cooperating with law enforcement and referred further questions to police.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer responded on social media, calling it a “brutal act of violence.”
“Our thoughts are with the victims and the community… I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect,” she posted on X.
Investigation Ongoing
Police were seen interviewing employees and collecting evidence Saturday evening. Drivers were asked to avoid the area.
Traverse City, located on the Lake Michigan coast, is a well-known vacation destination. The area is home to the National Cherry Festival and nearby Sleeping Bear Dunes.
