A loaded shotgun was accidentally fired by a dog inside a pickup truck at a Nebraska gas station, injuring a woman stopped at a nearby traffic light. Local authorities reported the incident, which occurred around noon.
The truck was at the Short Stop gas station when the owner left the dog inside while stepping into the store. Another passenger remained near the front passenger-side door.
Authorities revealed that the dog moved in the back seat and unintentionally triggered the shotgun, which had a live round. The blast penetrated the truck’s front passenger-side door and struck a woman sitting in an adjacent car.
The pellet hit her upper right arm while it was resting out the window, but fortunately, her injuries were not life-threatening. A family member transported her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.
Initial reports mistakenly described the event as involving a BB gun, but responding officers later confirmed it was a shotgun based on the damage to the truck. Social media videos highlighted the chaotic moments following the event.
The Scottsbluff Police Department is examining how the firearm was stored and managed in the vehicle.
