Unexpected Democrat Endorses Mullin for Homeland Security Role

In a remarkable display of bipartisanship, Senate Republicans received surprising support from Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico for Markwayne Mullin’s nomination to lead the Department of Homeland Security. The Senate approved the nomination with a vote of 54-37 during a rare Sunday session.

Mullin, who is set to replace DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, will face a final confirmation vote soon. Heinrich’s backing was unexpected, especially as his colleague, Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman, had already shown support.

Heinrich stated, “This might come as a surprise, but I consider Markwayne Mullin a friend. We have a constructive working relationship and have collaborated on initiatives like the Tribal Buffalo Management Act.”

He highlighted Mullin’s independence as a reason for his support, noting that he is not easily influenced on policy matters. Heinrich lamented the lack of productive collaboration with recent DHS leadership.

“For five years, I’ve struggled to form a constructive relationship with the Secretary of Homeland Security, despite representing an area critical to border security,” Heinrich remarked, advocating for a DHS head willing to address border-state needs.

He expressed hope that Mullin would be that leader, emphasizing the importance of engaging discussions about unique challenges facing the southwest. Their previous collaboration on bipartisan legislation highlights their ability to work across party lines.

This unexpected endorsement gives former President Trump a boost as he seeks to secure critical Cabinet positions, with the final vote on Mullin’s nomination imminent.
