Trump Vows to End Mail-in Ballots Ahead of 2026 Midterm Election

In a lengthy Truth Social post, President Donald Trump announced plans to lead a movement to end both mail-in ballots and voting machines in U.S. elections.

Trump’s Statement

“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS,” Trump wrote, also blasting what he called “Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES.” He pledged to sign an executive order on the issue ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“Remember, the States are merely an ‘agent’ for the Federal Government in counting and tabulating the votes. They must do what the Federal Government, as represented by the President of the United States, tells them, FOR THE GOOD OF OUR COUNTRY, to do,” Trump stated.

The president argued that ending mail-in voting is necessary to protect election integrity and ensure that “the voice of the people is heard loud and clear.”

“ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING, and everybody, IN PARTICULAR THE DEMOCRATS, KNOWS THIS,” Trump added. “The mail-in ballot hoax, using voting machines that are a complete and total disaster, must end, NOW!!!”

He concluded: “REMEMBER, WITHOUT FAIR AND HONEST ELECTIONS, AND STRONG AND POWERFUL BORDERS, YOU DON’T HAVE EVEN A SEMBLANCE OF A COUNTRY.”

Republican Support

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) quickly voiced her support, posting on X: “I strongly support President Trump in ending mail in voting!! Elections have been stolen for decades with this practice that is ripe for fraud. Save America by saving our elections!!!”

Mail-In Ballots in U.S. Elections

During the 2024 election, nearly one-third of votes were cast by mail, according to The Hill, citing U.S. Election Assistance Commission data. While lower than the 43% peak seen during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the figure remains well above pre-pandemic levels.

Legal Challenges Ahead

Trump’s push to impose federal rules on elections has already faced hurdles. In June, a judge struck down his executive order barring states from counting mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day but arriving later, ruling that the president lacked the authority to set state election laws.
