Trump Updates Iran Ceasefire Status Amid Ongoing Negotiations

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump revealed that the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran has been prolonged as negotiations continue. This decision was made just before the original ceasefire agreement was set to lapse.

“Given Iran’s fractured government and at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we will hold off on military action until a unified proposal from their leadership is presented,” Trump shared on Truth Social.

“As a result, our military will maintain the blockade and remain fully prepared, extending the ceasefire until their proposal is finalized,” he added.

The initial ceasefire, established by Trump on April 7, was announced before a critical 8 p.m. deadline that would have escalated military actions. At that juncture, Trump had warned of significant military responses unless the Iranian regime reopened the Strait of Hormuz for commercial traffic.

Pakistan has played a vital role as the mediator, suggesting a two-week “double-sided” ceasefire that required Iran to ensure safe travel through the strait. Trump characterized this agreement as a crucial pause for negotiating a comprehensive peace settlement in the Middle East.

Under the initial terms, Iran was supposed to allow oil and gas vessels to pass freely through the strait, while the U.S. committed to suspending potential strikes.

Since the ceasefire took effect, both sides have traded accusations of minor infractions, yet the ceasefire remains in place. Direct negotiations saw U.S. and Iranian representatives meet in Pakistan on April 11-12. The U.S. delegation included Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, although no agreement was achieved.

Trump remains hopeful about the possibility of further discussions in the coming days, although no announcement for a subsequent round of meetings has been made as of this report.

This story is still developing.
