President Trump has announced a temporary halt to “Project Freedom,” an initiative focused on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, citing what he described as “great progress” in negotiations with Iran.
In a Tuesday night post on Truth Social, Trump referred to the recent U.S.-Iran conflict as a limited “skirmish” and stated that the pause would be of a “short period” while further negotiations are underway. He emphasized that Tehran “knows what not to do.”
U.S. officials have maintained that pressure on Iran is still firmly in place, even with this slight shift in operations.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed that the U.S. blockade against Iranian ports remains intact. He noted that Iran’s military actions since the announcement of the ceasefire have not escalated to a level warranting a return to major combat.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that Operation Epic Fury has concluded, yet reiterated that economic sanctions will remain in effect. He warned that Iran continues to face “generational destruction to their economy.”
Moreover, Rubio cautioned Tehran’s allies as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travels to Beijing to meet with his Chinese counterpart. He made it clear that any nations aiding Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions would encounter secondary repercussions.
The decision to pause drew immediate support from a key intermediary. Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed gratitude for Trump’s bold leadership in an announcement regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Sharif praised what he termed Trump’s “gracious response” to appeals from Pakistan and other regional stakeholders, including Saudi Arabia.

“President Trump‘s gracious response to the request made by Pakistan and other brotherly countries, particularly the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and my dear brother Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia H.R.H Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will go a long way towards advancing regional peace, stability, and reconciliation during this sensitive period,” Sharif stated on X.

Sharif asserted that Pakistan remains devoted to supporting a diplomatic resolution.
“Pakistan is steadfast in its commitment to all initiatives that encourage restraint and peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. We are optimistic that the current momentum will pave the way for a durable peace and stability in the region and beyond,” he declared.

Trump’s strategy elevates the stakes in the ongoing negotiations facilitated by Middle Eastern intermediaries. Washington is signaling an ability to adjust military operations while keeping economic pressure firmly intact.
For Iran, the implications are clear: while advances in talks are evident, the sanctions regime remains unchanged, and there are warnings for third nations that may assist Iran in evading these restrictions.
As it stands, the Strait of Hormuz remains a critical focal point, with the White House hoping that a short pause in Project Freedom will transform diplomatic “momentum” into a solid deal, without relinquishing the leverage that prompted Iran to engage in discussions.
