Trump Preparing Order to Completely Eliminate Department of Education

President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing to sign an executive order aimed at eliminating the Department of Education, two sources familiar with the plans told NBC News. The move would deliver on a long-standing conservative push to return education oversight to the states.

Reports on Monday hinted that the President would be issuing orders to dismantle the agency from within, but an effort at outright abolishment was not expected until today.

While Trump cannot unilaterally abolish a federal agency without Congress, the executive order is expected to limit the department’s role severely. Republicans see this as a crucial first step in dismantling what they call bloated federal bureaucracy.

The planned order follows years of campaign promises from Trump to shut down the Education Department. “One other thing I’ll be doing very early in the administration is closing up the Department of Education in Washington D.C., and sending all education and education work and needs back to the states,” Trump declared in a 2023 campaign video.

Conservatives argue that Washington’s influence over local schools has only led to worse outcomes. “In total, American society pours more than $1 trillion a year into public education systems, but instead of being at the top of the list, we are literally right smack — guess what — at the bottom,” Trump said at the time.

The reported executive order follows last week’s move by Trump to expand school choice, directing the Education Department to provide new guidance on using federal funds to support private and charter schools. The order gives states more freedom to allocate education dollars, a major win for Republican governors.

School choice has long been a top GOP priority, with Republican-led states expanding funding for low-income families to leave failing public schools. Now, Trump appears determined to take the fight even further by gutting the federal agency altogether.

Calls to abolish the Education Department have gained traction among Republicans in recent years. During the 2024 GOP primary, candidates like Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley made it a key campaign promise, pledging to either “clean out” or dismantle the agency.

In a July 2024 campaign email, Trump laid out additional education priorities, including cutting federal funds to schools pushing “critical race theory” and launching civil rights investigations into anti-Asian discrimination.

He also pledged to create a new credentialing system for teachers who “embrace patriotic values” and to “find and remove radicals who have infiltrated the federal Department of Education.”

With this latest executive order, Trump is making it clear that he’s serious about shaking up the education system. The question now is whether Congress—and the courts—will let him follow through.
