President Donald Trump is seeking accountability from CNN after the network reported on an Iranian statement regarding a ceasefire agreement. He labeled this coverage as ‘fake news’ and announced that an investigation is being initiated to ascertain if any crime occurred.
The network reported on a U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement just hours before Trump was expected to launch an attack on Iranian infrastructure. CNN referenced Iranian officials who characterized the negotiations as a ‘great victory’ for Iran, suggesting that Trump had accepted terms allowing oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mediaite was the first to highlight the Iranian statement’s use by CNN. Trump took to Truth Social to vehemently denounce the network for promoting what he considered to be a fraudulent claim.
He stated, ‘The alleged Statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows. The false Statement was linked to a Fake News site (from Nigeria) and, of course, immediately picked up by CNN, and blared out as a “legitimate” headline.’
Trump pointed out that a subsequent official statement from Iran contradicted CNN’s version. He noted, ‘The Official Statement by Iran was just released, and posted on TRUTH, below. Authorities are looking to determine whether or not a crime was committed on the issuance of the Fake CNN World Statement, or was it a sick rogue player? CNN is being ordered to immediately withdraw this Statement with full apologies for their, as usual, terrible “reporting.” Results of the investigation will be announced in the near future.’

CNN responded by asserting that it stands by its reporting. A spokesperson stated, ‘The statement in question was obtained by CNN from Iranian officials and reported on multiple Iranian state media outlets.’ They emphasized that the statement was sourced from specific Iranian spokespeople known to them.
This incident marks another chapter in the ongoing tension between Trump and CNN, especially amidst the critical context of the Iran conflict and its implications for global energy markets.
FCC chair Brendan Carr also criticized the reporting, emphasizing the necessity for accountability. He remarked, ‘Fake news is bad enough for the country, but pushing out a hoax headline in such a sensitive national security moment as this requires accountability.’ He further stated that Iran’s official statement is at odds with the headline attributed by CNN.
CNN is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers Discovery, which was recently sold to Paramount, a media company connected to Trump allies Larry and David Ellison.
