During a recent phone interview with NBC News, President Donald Trump raised questions about the fate of Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei.
Trump stated, “I’m hearing he’s not alive, and if he is, he should do something very smart for his country, and that’s surrender.” He went on to emphasize that there has been no confirmation of Khamenei being alive.
Furthermore, Trump revealed that the Iranian government has expressed interest in negotiating a ceasefire, but he made it clear that the terms are not satisfactory. “Iran wants to make a deal, and I don’t want to make it because the terms aren’t good enough yet,” he reiterated.
Context of Khamenei’s Leadership
Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, took on the leadership role after his father’s death during a wave of U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28. This change in leadership follows that confirmed by Iranian state media regarding Ali Khamenei’s demise.
On the day of Ali Khamenei’s death, President Trump proclaimed on Truth Social that, “Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead.” He described this as a significant moment of justice for not only Iranians but for many globally impacted by Khamenei’s actions.
Concerns Over Mojtaba’s Condition
Aged 56, Mojtaba was reportedly wounded in the same airstrikes that claimed his father’s life. War Secretary Pete Hegseth mentioned that he is believed to have suffered severe injuries as a result of the bombing.
Reports also indicated that Iran has circulated AI-enhanced images of Mojtaba, implying that he may be too damaged for public appearances.
Additionally, the State Department has put a $10 million bounty on information concerning Mojtaba and other significant Iranian leaders.
Regardless of the new leader’s situation, Trump has maintained his stance against accepting Mojtaba’s legitimacy, advocating for a total overhaul of the current Iranian regime.
