On Wednesday evening, President Donald Trump articulated that the U.S. had no prior notification regarding Israel’s airstrikes on a crucial Iranian gas field, which prompted a counterattack on a significant Qatari gas site. Trump insisted that Israel should show restraint and assured that further attacks on Iranian energy facilities would not be condoned.
These strikes targeted Iran’s South Pars gas field, the largest natural gas reserve globally, located in the Persian Gulf. Iranian authorities reported extensive damage affecting various processing stages, leading to crucial operational shutdowns.
In a retaliatory move, Iran directed missile strikes at Qatari energy installations, causing severe damage and fires at the Ras Laffan LNG complex—one of the leading liquefied natural gas hubs. Qatar’s state energy firm confirmed substantial operational impacts, prompting the government to expel Iranian security personnel.
The ramifications of these attacks are significant for global energy markets. The South Pars field, also known as the North Field, is vital for Iran’s natural gas production and crucial to Qatar’s LNG exports, affecting supply across Asia, Europe, and beyond. Any sustained disruption poses a risk to regional energy security.
The attacks occur against a backdrop of heightened tensions, particularly with Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical transit route for about 20 percent of global oil exports.
In immediate market reactions, Brent crude prices surged over 5 percent, nearing $109 per barrel, while similar movements were noted for West Texas Intermediate. Natural gas prices also spiked sharply across Europe, the U.S., and Asia.

Trump further elaborated on the situation via Truth Social, reiterating his distance from the strikes while advocating for restraint moving forward.
He stated, “Israel, out of anger for what has transpired in the Middle East, has struck at a major facility known as South Pars Gas Field in Iran, though the U.S. was unaware of this attack. Qatar was uninvolved and had no foreknowledge of the incident.”
Additionally, Trump remarked, “Unfortunately, Iran misinterpreted the circumstances and mistakenly retaliated against Qatar’s LNG facilities. NO MORE ATTACKS ON THE SOUTH PARS FIELD WILL OCCUR unless Iran instigates further violence against Qatar. Should that happen, the U.S. will respond decisively, demonstrating strength Iran has never encountered.”
He concluded with a warning against excessive violence, stressing the long-term consequences such actions would have on Iran, but reaffirmed his readiness to act should Qatari interests be targeted again.
