Trump Backs Andy Barr in High-Stakes Senate Primary

On Friday, former President Donald Trump revealed his endorsement for U.S. Rep. Andy Barr (R-KY) in the fiercely contested Republican Senate primary in Kentucky. This announcement follows months of mounting speculation regarding the outcome, as three prominent candidates compete to fill the seat vacated by Mitch McConnell.

This race features former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, businessman Nate Morris, and Rep. Barr. With the primaries occurring on May 19, the intense rivalry garners national interest given Kentucky’s strong Republican trends, making the victor favored in the subsequent general election.

According to an Emerson College poll released on April 2, Barr secured 28 percent support from likely Republican primary voters, while Cameron held 21 percent and Morris reached 15 percent, with 29 percent still undecided. Earlier polls showed a tighter race, but recent independent surveys indicate Barr’s lead.

Trump made his awaited endorsement on May 1, expressing his support for Barr through a post on Truth Social. In this message, he urged Morris to withdraw and accept a position as an ambassador in his administration.

Praising Morris as “a terrific businessman and strong MAGA Warrior,” Trump described him as “Oxford educated, tough as nails,” and ideal for representing America. Following Trump’s suggestion, Morris, who had garnered significant grassroots backing, confirmed his acceptance of the offer and announced a suspension of his campaign, including an endorsement from the late Charlie Kirk.

In another post, Trump reaffirmed his backing of Barr, stating, “Andy Barr has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Kentucky.”

Barr responded quickly, expressing gratitude for Trump’s endorsement. He noted, “I’m honored to have President Trump’s complete and total endorsement,” and mentioned Trump’s supportive comments during a March rally in Northern Kentucky.

Barr emphasized his alignment with Trump’s vision, stating, “Just like the President said at his Northern Kentucky rally in March, I’ve been with him all the way and I always will be.” He pledged to stand with Trump completely to advance Kentucky’s interests and continue Making America Great Again.

Trump’s endorsement is likely to unify support behind Barr as the primary draws near. Representing Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District, Barr has highlighted his early backing of Trump and his commitment to implementing the administration’s agenda.

Additionally, Trump is actively involved in the primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, where he has endorsed retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein against long-serving Rep. Thomas Massie.
