Trans Activist Arrested in Massachusetts Murder, Earlier Machete Assault Case Dismissed

A Massachusetts father was shot and killed Thursday morning after confronting a suspect spraying graffiti on a bridge, police said.

The victim, Kevin Doherty, 57, had just dropped off his six-year-old son at school when he saw the vandalism near Jordan Pond.

Confrontation Turns Deadly

Authorities said Doherty stopped to photograph the graffiti and then called 911 to report the crime. While he was still on the phone with dispatchers, an argument broke out, and shots were fired.

Doherty was struck and later pronounced dead.

The suspect, identified as Snehal Ansh Srivastava, 26, a transgender individual who also goes by the name “Sasha Shakur,” was arrested later at his home.

Prior History of Violence

Court records show Srivastava has a history of violence.

In 2022, police in Westborough said Srivastava attempted to run over Nitish Sharma with his car outside a movie theater before attacking him with a machete. The men were strangers.

“He swung at me, and I grabbed the blade. He was swinging at my face, and when he pulled the blade back, my thumb started dangling,” Sharma recalled. Strangers rushed to call 911, saving his life.

Srivastava was later ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation and was found competent to stand trial. But court records show the case was dismissed this past July.

“Had he been sent to jail last month, that innocent family would still have their father,” Sharma said after learning of Kevin Doherty’s death. “That child did not deserve to lose a father. This guy should be in prison for the rest of his life.”

Prosecutors confirmed Srivastava will be held without bail pending a September 12 court hearing.

Community Shock

The killing comes just one day after the deadly mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, adding to public concern about violence nationwide.

Neighbors described Doherty as a devoted father and community member.
