Tragic Loss of Former NFL Player Chris Payton-Jones

Former NFL defensive back Chris Payton-Jones tragically died in a fiery vehicle accident in Florida late Saturday night. He was just 30 years old.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Payton-Jones was driving when his vehicle collided with a pickup truck, leading to an overturn and subsequent fire. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene, as reported by FOX 2 Now.

The United Football League expressed deep sorrow at the news of Payton-Jones’ passing, where he last played for the St. Louis Battlehawks.

“The United Football League is in mourning after the tragic passing of former St. Louis Battlehawks Defensive Back Chris Payton-Jones. Chris was a beloved teammate and leader in the locker room, exemplifying hard work, determination, and resilience throughout his career.

“Moreover, Chris was a bright spirit who brought joy to everyone in the league during his three years. His humility and integrity shone through in fan appearances and media events, where he openly shared his journey. Our condolences are with his family, friends, teammates, and all those affected by this loss.”

A standout athlete in college, Payton-Jones played for Nebraska before making his mark in professional football, which included time in the NFL and spring football leagues. He played for four NFL teams between 2018 and 2021 and later joined the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL before finishing his career with the Battlehawks in the UFL.

Payton-Jones entered the professional league as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He also had brief tenures with the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and Tennessee Titans.

During his time in the NFL, he participated in 29 games, accumulating 48 tackles and seven pass breakups.

With the St. Louis Battlehawks, he played in 18 regular-season games, where he made 56 tackles and had two interceptions, establishing himself as a key figure in the defensive lineup and a favorite among fans during the league’s spring season.

Authorities have yet to provide additional information about the accident.
