Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has died in a tragic murder-suicide that took place in his Fairfax County residence early Thursday morning.
According to reports, Fairfax fatally shot his wife multiple times before turning the firearm on himself. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis detailed the horrific events in a press conference, stating, “Justin Fairfax shot and killed – shot several times – and killed his wife, ran to a different part of the home, and then killed himself with the same firearm.”
Investigation findings show that the couple had been living separately while going through a divorce. Fairfax had recently received legal documents related to the divorce proceedings, indicating impending court dates.
The police noted a previous incident earlier this year when Fairfax contacted law enforcement, alleging that his wife had assaulted him. However, footage reviewed by the police contradicted his claims, revealing that no such incident had occurred.
Fairfax was a member of the Democratic Party, serving as Virginia’s 41st lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Governor Ralph Northam.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Fairfax later established his home in Annandale, Virginia, where he and his wife raised two children.

Prior to his statewide political career, Fairfax was a federal prosecutor and worked in private practice, enhancing his reputation within Virginia’s Democratic landscape. He graduated from Duke University and Columbia Law School and had ambitions that extended beyond his time in Richmond.
Fairfax gained national attention during his 2017 lieutenant governor campaign, where he won against a competitive field in the Democratic primary and subsequently in the general election. He was often viewed as a potential future candidate for governor and a significant figure among younger Democrats.

However, his tenure was marred by controversy, especially in 2019 when he faced sexual misconduct allegations from multiple women, which he firmly denied. These accusations severely impacted his political career.
Despite completing his term, Fairfax struggled to regain his political footing. His 2021 gubernatorial bid faltered as he failed to secure the party nomination, marking a notable decline from his earlier promising position.
