Tim Walz Shifts Stance, Applauds DOJ’s Somali Business Raids Amid Ongoing Fraud Issues

Governor Tim Walz is aligning himself with the Trump-era Justice Department, a group he frequently criticized in the past.

Following a series of raids that saw over 20 sites in Minneapolis targeted in a comprehensive fraud investigation, Walz expressed praise for the operation, asserting that it demonstrated his administration’s commitment to tackling fraud in government programs.

“If you commit fraud in Minnesota, you’re going to get caught — and today showed that. We catch criminals when state and federal agencies work together. Joint investigations are effective, and justice depends on it,” he stated.

The raids were part of a court-approved probe aimed at uncovering fraud activities linked to primarily Somali-owned businesses, particularly child care centers. Authorities executed 22 search warrants with cooperation from various law enforcement agencies.

A Department of Justice spokesperson commented, “Today, the FBI, in collaboration with state and local law enforcement, is conducting court-authorized law enforcement activities as a part of an active fraud investigation.”

It’s vital to note that officials clarified this operation was unrelated to immigration enforcement. Investigators are looking into claims that some child care providers were billing the state for services that were never rendered, according to sources familiar with the situation.

Among the locations targeted were Quality Learning Center and Baby Halimo Child Care, both situated in Minneapolis. This comes at a time when Minnesota is facing heightened public discontent regarding fraud allegations within social service initiatives, including child care assistance.

The Quality Learning Center has garnered national attention for all the wrong reasons, as earlier investigations questioned the legitimacy of certain daycare sites. Blogger Nick Shirley reported visiting various locations only to find empty spaces or unresponsive contacts. He tried to enroll a child but couldn’t confirm any operational status at several sites.

As of Tuesday, no charges had been filed in connection with the raids, and the investigation continues.

Walz, under fire from conservative critics regarding Minnesota’s broader fraud challenges, highlighted in another post how the raids signify that the system functions as intended.

“These raids were executed because our state agencies identified irregular activities and reported them. That’s how the system is designed to function, and we will persist as long as fraudsters exist,” he added.

He also shifted focus to push for a joint investigation into two murders.

“Let’s now collaborate on investigating the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good — rather than selectively pursuing justice or ignoring what needs addressing.”

However, not everyone is convinced by Walz’s sudden endorsement of the raids. Critics accuse him of trying to claim credit for actions primarily driven by federal investigators and growing public pressure, rather than leadership from St. Paul.

“Something doesn’t stack up here, Timmy boy. Stop attempting to take credit, you absolute buffoon,” one critic remarked.

The crux of the political battle lies in the ownership of the narrative. Walz presents the raids as evidence that state agencies are promptly flagging suspicious activities and collaborating with federal partners. Detractors argue that he is desperately trying to reshape the discourse after a series of reports regarding fraud in Minnesota and the notion that state officials were negligent in recognizing the issues.

Nevertheless, the clear message from law enforcement and prosecutors remains: the investigation is ongoing, warrants have been duly authorized by a court, and investigators are delving into the possibility that taxpayer-funded child care resources were billed for services that did not occur.
