Terror Threat Disrupts NYC as Authorities Respond to Bomb Scare Near Gracie Mansion

A bomb scare in New York City near Gracie Mansion caused the evacuation of Carl Schurz Park on Tuesday. This response came shortly after two teenagers, reportedly influenced by ISIS, attempted to detonate improvised explosives close to the mayor’s residence.

Authorities swiftly cleared the park on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, prompting bystanders and residents to leave with little explanation. Social media captured the scene as NYPD officers patrolled the area.

NewsNation reporter Marcus Espinoza shared on X, “NYPD closing and evacuating Carl Schurz park, it’s immediately adjacent to Gracie Mansion.” He recounted his experience when asked to vacate, receiving minimal details from law enforcement.

Following this, the NYPD issued a public notice urging people to steer clear of Carl Schurz Park and specific streets surrounding it due to ongoing police activity.

Details regarding the reason for the evacuation remain unclear, although a helicopter was observed in the vicinity as the police restricted access.

This heightened alert follows an explosive incident near the mansion just days prior. According to officials, two U.S. nationals were apprehended after a homemade explosive was thrown during a protest near Gracie Mansion, thankfully failing to detonate.

The suspects, 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi, face terrorism-related charges. Law enforcement indicated that they were inspired by Islamic State propaganda.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch remarked, “We were fortunate that the devices used this weekend did not cause the kind of harm that they were certainly capable of causing.” She emphasized the dangers posed by such devices.

Tisch stated, “The defendants were inspired by ISIS to carry out their attack,” highlighting the ongoing threat from the terror organization.

She reiterated, “There should be no confusion about what ISIS constitutes. It is a designated foreign terrorist organization responsible for deadly terrorist attacks across the globe.”

During the weekend protest that preceded these events, tensions escalated between different groups, prompting backlash over violence. Mayor Mamdani expressed outrage not only at the altercations but at the attempt to deploy explosives.

He stated, “What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable.”

On Tuesday, the FBI conducted a search of a storage unit linked to the previous incident, uncovering explosive residue.

FBI Special Agent Bomb Technicians, along with local bomb squads, performed a controlled detonation to maintain safety in the area.
