Tennessee Republicans unveiled a new congressional map that significantly targets the state’s only Democratic seat, currently held by Rep. Steve Cohen. This proposal aims to strengthen the Republican position as the midterms approach.
The plan reconfigures Memphis, once mostly contained within a single district, by dividing it into three parts, integrating it into districts that lean Republican. This strategy is viewed by many as a tactic to diminish urban voting influence.
The announcement coincided with state lawmakers reviewing the new boundaries at the Capitol and comes during a nationwide debate over redistricting. President Donald Trump has encouraged Republican-led states to implement mid-decade changes to their maps.
Recently, Trump celebrated a legal victory when the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s congressional map, classifying it as an illegal gerrymander. This ruling may jeopardize at least one Democratic seat in Louisiana.
The Supreme Court has opined that redistricting, like the judicial system, should be color-blind. The decision indicated states can redistrict based off partisan politics. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton defended the new proposal, referencing the Supreme Court’s guidance. He remarked, “The Supreme Court has opined that redistricting, like the judicial system, should be color-blind.” He asserted that states can engage in redistricting based on partisan considerations.
“Today, Tennessee joins other red and blue states in redrawing their congressional maps,” he added. However, any modifications still require legislative approval and may face challenges both legally and politically.
If the map is accepted, it could significantly alter the political landscape in Tennessee, making it more challenging for Democrats to gain ground in a tightly contested Congressional year.
