Tennessee Celebrates Traditional Families with New Month Designation

Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee has officially declared June as ‘Nuclear Family Month,’ creating a distinct alternative to Pride Month that has already generated significant opposition.

The resolution was signed by Lee on April 9, following its passage through the state legislature. It originated in February 2025, receiving approval from the House in April and the Senate in March.

This new measure positions the conventional family unit as essential to societal well-being and warns of its current vulnerabilities.

According to the resolution, ‘The nuclear family, consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children, is God’s design for familial structure and has been the bedrock of society since the creation of the world.’

Supporters of the resolution reference statistics that link fatherless homes to increased risks of poverty, substance abuse, and mental health issues. They claim that a significant percentage of youth suicides arise from these homes, though the document lacks specific sources for its claims.

Furthermore, it connects fragile family structures to incidents of school violence, citing a study by Peter Langman indicating that a vast majority of school shooters came from unstable family backgrounds.

The resolution asserts that ‘the nuclear family is under attack in our beloved State and nation,’ directing criticism toward international organizations like the World Health Organization and the United Nations for allegedly promoting practices such as sterilization and abortion.

Tennessee’s marriage trends, as recorded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, illustrate broader cultural changes. In 2023, the state saw approximately seven marriages per 1,000 people, along with about three divorces per 1,000. Comparatively, national marriage rates have decreased from 8.2 per 1,000 in 2000 to 6.2 in 2022, with divorce rates also declining.

Opponents, particularly ‘Pride’ advocates, have criticized the resolution, labeling it as exclusionary. A GLAAD spokesperson was quoted expressing concern over lawmakers promoting divisive measures that fail to represent the diverse family dynamics in Tennessee.
