Southwest Flight Diverted to Atlanta After Onboard Security Alert

Video captured the moment a Southwest passenger was detained after a possible security matter forced a diversion from Nashville to Fort Lauderdale.

Southwest called it a “possible security matter” while social posts described the incident as a “bomb threat”.

Fox 5 Atlanta reported the alert came mid-flight and that the crew coordinated with air traffic control and law enforcement for an immediate response.

The flight made an emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport where officers, including the airport’s Special Response Team in tactical gear, awaited on the tarmac.

Passengers were instructed to bend forward with hands on seatbacks as officers conducted a methodical security sweep through the cabin.

Armed officers moved down the rows and, toward the rear of the plane, identified and detained one passenger who was removed without incident.

The detained individual’s identity has not been released and, as of this report, no charges have been announced.

Officials have not confirmed whether any prohibited or dangerous items were discovered during the search of the aircraft or passengers’ belongings.

Southwest said the diversion was carried out “out of an abundance of caution,” praised the professionalism of the flight crew, and apologized to customers for the delay.

No injuries were reported among passengers or crew and the plane was cleared to continue to its destination later that evening.

Some travelers briefly deplaned while others remained onboard during the inspection before the flight departed Atlanta.
