Singer Lily Allen Claims ‘My Children Ruined My Career’: You Can’t ‘Have It All’

British singer and actress Lily Allen asserts that raising two children “totally ruined” her music career. She firmly states that women can’t “have it all” with regards to having both a family and a flourishing career.

“My kids ruined my career,” Allen remarked during a recent interview on The Radio Times Podcast, in response to a question about whether she had to “rethink career strategy” following the birth of her children.

“I never really had a strategy when it comes to my career, but yeah, my kids ruined it,” the 38-year-old stated. “I mean, I love them, and they fulfill me, but in terms of, like, you know, being a pop star, they totally ruined it.”

The “Not Fair” singer continued to express her frustration, stating that she finds it “really annoying” when people suggest that women can “have it all” in terms of balancing children and a successful career.

“It just doesn’t mix,” she emphasized. “And it really bothers me when people claim you can have it all, because frankly, you can’t.”

Allen shares two children, 12-year-old Ethel Mary and 11-year-old Marnie Rose, with her former husband, Sam Cooper. The couple tied the knot in 2011 and parted ways in 2018.

In 2020, Allen married Stranger Things star David Harbour.

Allen, who is the sister of Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen, added, “Some people prioritize their career over their kids, and that’s their choice, but my parents were pretty absent when I was growing up.”

“And I feel like that really left some nasty scars that I’m not willing to repeat on my end,” she added.

“So, I decided to take a step back and focus on them, and I’m glad I did, because I think they’ve turned out to be pretty well-rounded people. Fingers crossed,” Allen declared.

Another participant in the podcast then added, stating, “That’s so true what you said about how we are fed this narrative that we can have it all, and I don’t have kids, but I couldn’t do my job with two children at the moment.”
