On election night, Republican Representative Victoria Spartz faced unexpected challenges when initial results revealed her Democratic challenger, J.D. Ford, in a strong lead. This development caused significant shifts in her projected chances of victory.
Entering the race, Spartz was favored to win her seat in Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. However, as results were reported, her odds dropped to just 41%, while Ford surged to 59%.
This represented a staggering 40-point decline for Spartz, a remarkable change for an incumbent who had previously been estimated with an 81% likelihood of winning.
The early returns painted a clear picture of the shift in momentum. As of 6:22 p.m. Eastern, data from Decision Desk HQ showed Ford leading with 49,541 votes against Spartz’s 23,390. This translated to roughly 68% of the counted votes for the Democrat, versus 32% for the Republican, with about 28% of the district’s votes reported.

All results reported up to that point were exclusively from Hamilton County, with five additional counties yet to provide their vote counts. While a significant portion of the totals remained outstanding, the initial results were enough to shift Spartz’s standing from that of a favorite to an underdog in the race.
It’s important to note that these market figures reflect traders’ expectations of the outcome rather than the actual vote shares. Neither the early returns nor the drastic change in Spartz’s odds constituted a formal call for the race at this stage.
