San Francisco Mayor Observes Assault on His Security Detail Near the Tenderloin

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie watched his police security detail get attacked near the Tenderloin, leaving one officer bleeding after striking his head on pavement.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near Cedar Street, according to Mission Local.

At least three people allegedly blocked the mayor’s black SUV while Lurie rode with a police officer and a driver who was also an officer.

The mayor stepped out and asked the group to move, the injured officer later told responding officers.

The group initially seemed to comply before one man began talking incoherently, the officer said.

When the officer told the man to move along, the suspect briefly stepped back and then suddenly charged him.

The officer grabbed the man’s upper body and the two fell to the ground during the struggle, with the officer striking his head and bleeding.

At the same time Lurie’s driver confronted another man who did not appear injured.

Authorities said it was unclear whether the second man assaulted anyone and police had not clarified the role of a third individual.

Police said the suspected attacker was handcuffed at the scene and repeatedly shouted “F–k you!” as officers took him into custody.

A second suspect tried to run but was captured a short distance away.

More than a dozen officers quickly converged on the block and surrounded the two suspects as they lay handcuffed on the street.

Lurie remained at the scene and appeared shaken as officers worked to secure the area.

The mayor told Mission Local the men had attempted to fight an officer but declined to give further details.

The San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to Cedar and Polk streets at about 5:38 p.m. and arrested two men.

The department said two officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, praised the officers’ swift and courageous actions.

“We’re grateful the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation,” Wong said.

“We wish our injured officer a full and speedy recovery and commend all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.”
