Republican Contender Shows Strong Lead in Oregon Gubernatorial Poll

Chris Dudley, the Republican nominee for governor of Oregon, has taken the lead in a recent general-election poll against the current Democratic governor, Tina Kotek.

Although Dudley has not held public office before, his experience as a former NBA player and successful business executive adds weight to his campaign. He spent 16 seasons in the NBA, notably with the Portland Trailblazers.

After his basketball career concluded in 2003, Dudley ventured into business, co-founding Filigree Wealth Advisors and later serving as CEO and board chairman of Diabetomics, a medical diagnostics firm. Moreover, he founded the Chris Dudley Foundation focused on aiding children with diabetes and has been treasurer for the NBA Players Association.

This poll, commissioned by Dudley’s campaign and conducted by Hoffman Research Group, surveyed 603 likely voters from May 11-12, with a margin of error of +/- four percentage points.

In a direct comparison, Dudley garnered 48 percent support, whereas Kotek was at 44 percent. Another Republican, state Sen. Christine Drazan, was found to be tied with Kotek at 45 percent.

The results indicated that a significant 53 percent of those surveyed view Kotek unfavorably, while only 33 percent saw her favorably. Additionally, a striking 58 percent believe Oregon is on the wrong path.

The timing of the poll is crucial, as it comes just before the May 19 Republican primary, which will determine the candidates for the general election under Oregon’s mail-in voting system. Both Dudley and Drazan are described as viable contenders against the incumbent, of whom only Dudley has shown a polling lead.

Regardless of the eventual nominee, they will face a considerable challenge, given that Republicans have not secured a statewide office in Oregon since 1994 when labor commissioner Jack Roberts was elected. The previous Republican governor was Victor Atiyeh, who won re-election back in 1982.
