Report: Hegseth Has Discussed Tennessee Gubernatorial Bid

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is reportedly exploring a potential bid for elected office in his home state of Tennessee, according to sources familiar with private conversations he’s had in recent weeks — a move that, if confirmed, would mark one of the most significant shake-ups within President Donald Trump’s Cabinet since his return to office, Newsmax reported.

Hegseth Eyeing Tennessee Governor’s Race?

Two individuals with direct knowledge say the 45-year-old Trump loyalist has expressed genuine interest in pursuing elected office — with governor of Tennessee being the role that has garnered the most attention in his discussions. One person said Hegseth had even inquired about eligibility requirements.

The Defense Department prohibits federal employees from seeking political office while serving, so Hegseth would be required to resign before launching a campaign.

Political Capital and Name Recognition

As one of the most prominent figures in Trump’s second-term Cabinet, Hegseth has enjoyed national exposure, particularly after a bruising Senate confirmation battle earlier this year. His service under Trump and frequent appearances in conservative media have earned him a loyal following and a strong America First base, especially in Southern states like Tennessee.

Insiders say he’s well-positioned to raise money quickly, build grassroots momentum, and capitalize on Trump’s enduring popularity in the state.

Pentagon Pushback

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell aggressively pushed back on the reporting, dismissing the NBC News story as “fake news.”

“Only two options exist: either the ‘sources’ are imaginary or these reporters are getting punked,” Parnell said.
“Secretary Hegseth’s focus remains solely on serving under President Trump and advancing the America First mission at the Department of Defense.”

Another source within Hegseth’s orbit told NBC the rumors were “totally off the table,” saying Hegseth had been “very, very clear” about staying through the 2026 midterms.

Sources Differ on Certainty

While denials remain strong, at least one individual who spoke directly with Hegseth in the last three weeks said his tone was “serious” rather than speculative, indicating more than idle curiosity. Another confirmed similar conversations but emphasized that no final decision had been made.

Previous Cabinet Shake-Ups

If Hegseth were to step down, it would be the biggest Cabinet departure since Elon Musk exited as head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency — a move that sent shockwaves through Trump’s inner circle earlier this year.
