Release of American Journalist Held by Iranian-Backed Group

Shelly Kittleson, a freelance American journalist, has been released after approximately eight days in captivity at the hands of an Iraqi paramilitary group. Her abduction occurred on March 31 in Baghdad.

The release was confirmed by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iranian-aligned militia, following negotiations with Iraqi authorities. Officials reported that Kittleson was freed in Baghdad and required to exit the country immediately.

As a seasoned journalist with over a decade of experience in the Middle East, Kittleson was covering events in Iraq for various outlets. Despite receiving prior warnings about potential dangers associated with her work, she chose to remain in the country.

The daylight kidnapping involved four individuals who forced Kittleson into a vehicle on a busy street, as evidenced by CCTV footage. Security forces pursued the vehicle, leading to a crash, but Kittleson was transferred to another vehicle that evaded law enforcement.

Initially, Iraqi security officials were unable to identify her abductors. However, investigations quickly linked the incident to the militia. Although Kataib Hezbollah did not formally claim responsibility, U.S. and Iraqi officials consistently pointed to the group.

Designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. since 2009, Kataib Hezbollah has a notorious history of attacking American interests in the region. Following Kittleson’s abduction, representatives from the group reached out to negotiate her release, tying it to the liberation of detained members.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani played a crucial role in facilitating discussions, which took place amid high regional tensions and ongoing militia attacks on U.S. facilities in Iraq. Throughout the week, U.S. officials coordinated efforts with their Iraqi counterparts to ensure Kittleson’s safe return.
