Pregnant Teen Shot in Road Rage Incident

A 17-year-old girl in her third trimester of pregnancy was fatally shot in a road rage incident over the weekend, authorities said.

The victim, identified as Katelynn Strate, was a passenger in a vehicle when another driver, 54-year-old Barry West, allegedly opened fire after a confrontation on the road, according to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Shooting Details

Deputies said Strate was traveling with two others on Sunday morning when West began tailgating their vehicle. After brake-checking escalated tensions between the cars, West fired a single shot, striking Strate in the head.

The driver immediately rushed her to a hospital. Strate, who was 27 weeks pregnant, delivered her baby before she was removed from life support.

Baby Survives

Family members confirmed that Strate’s child was delivered prematurely but is in stable condition in a neonatal intensive care unit.

“Katelynn tragically lost her life … while 27 weeks pregnant. Her baby survived, and we are now seeking help to cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and the essential baby items needed by her grandmother, who will now be caring for the baby,” relatives wrote in a GoFundMe appeal.

Suspect Arrested

West was arrested and initially charged with four counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and obstruction of justice.

The sheriff’s office said his charges will be upgraded following Strate’s death.

Authorities described the case as a senseless act of violence.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and encouraged the public to come forward with any additional information.
