Passing of Iconic Country Music Figure at 86

The legendary David Allan Coe has sadly passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his widow, Kimberly.

She shared heartfelt remarks, stating, “One of the best singers, songwriters, and performers of our time and never to be forgotten. My husband, my friend, my confidant and my life for many years. I’ll never forget him and I don’t want anyone else to ever forget him either.”

A representative revealed that Coe died in intensive care around 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, although a cause of death has yet to be disclosed.

“David is a musical treasure,” the representative noted, adding that he “appreciated all of the fans.”

Born on September 6, 1939, in Akron, Ohio, Coe gained a reputation for his hard-edged storytelling well before he made his mark in Nashville. His challenging early life included time spent in correctional facilities.

Upon his release, Coe ventured to Music City in pursuit of a career that reflected his authentic self. He released his first album, Penitentiary Blues, in 1970.

Quickly, he became a sought-after songwriter, with credits including Tanya Tucker’s chart-topping “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone)” in 1973.

Coe eventually made his mark as a solo artist, with the notable “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” reaching the top 10 in 1975. He continued producing albums, enhancing his outlaw persona with projects like Nothing Sacred in 1978 and Underground Album in 1982.

The 1980s brought him further mainstream acclaim with hits such as “The Ride” and “Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile.” He even ventured beyond traditional country music, collaborating with heavy metal band Pantera on the unique project Rebel Meets Rebel, showcasing his eclectic style.

Known as the “outlaw’s outlaw,” Coe stirred controversy with his lyrics, often exploring themes of substance use and explicit imagery.

Rolling Stone noted that Coe faced financial challenges in the mid-2010s, pleading guilty in 2015 to tax-related issues, which resulted in three years of probation and nearly $1 million in back taxes owed.

He also battled health complications in recent years, including COVID-19 in 2021, according to reports from Whiskey Riff.

Fox News Digital attempted to reach Coe’s representatives for further comment.
