Parents of Children Killed in Minneapolis Catholic School Shooting Speak Out

The families of the two children killed in Wednesday’s mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis have shared their grief publicly for the first time.

The victims were identified as 8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski. Both were killed when transgender gunman Robin Westman opened fire during a back-to-school Mass.

Fletcher Merkel Remembered

At a Thursday press conference, Fletcher’s father, Jesse Merkel, described his son as a loving child who enjoyed fishing, cooking, and sports.

“Yesterday, a coward decided to take our 8-year-old son Fletcher away from us,” Merkel said. “Because of their actions, we will never be allowed to hold him, talk to him, play with him and watch him grow into the wonderful young man he was on the path to becoming.”

He praised the quick actions of children and adults during the attack, saying their bravery prevented an even greater loss of life. “Without these people and their selfless actions, this could have been a tragedy of many magnitudes more,” Merkel said.

He closed by asking the community to remember Fletcher for the boy he was, not the way his life was taken. “Give your kids an extra hug and kiss today. We love you, Fletcher, you’ll always be with us.”

Harper Moyski’s Parents Issue Statement

Michael Moyski and Jackie Flavin released a written statement remembering their daughter Harper as a “bright, joyful, and deeply loved” 10-year-old.

“Our hearts are broken not only as parents, but also for Harper’s sister, who adored her big sister and is grieving an unimaginable loss,” the statement said.

Her parents also urged that Harper’s memory inspire change. “No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain. We urge our leaders and communities to take meaningful steps to address gun violence and the mental health crisis in this country. Change is possible, and it is necessary—so that Harper’s story does not become yet another in a long line of tragedies.”

The family thanked first responders and asked for privacy as they mourn. “Harper’s light will always shine through us, and we hope her memory inspires others to work toward a safer, more compassionate world,” they said.

The Attack

The shooting left two children dead and 18 others wounded, including 15 students and three elderly parishioners. Several remain in critical condition.

Westman, a 23-year-old former student of Annunciation, died at the scene after carrying out the attack.
